Join the ANSWER Coalition and other organizations in a “Jobs not Jails” contingent at the Saturday, Oct. 15 Rally for Jobs called by the National Action Network along with a number of labor organizations. People will be coming from New York, Philadelphia and other East Coast cities to participate in this action.

Unemployment is at its worst in 30 years. In 2010, only 77 percent of the population between the ages of 20 to 64 was employed. The overall number of African Americans who are not employed is actually 51 percent. The country has roughly the same amount of jobs as it did in 2000, while at the same time the population has increased by 30 million. The economy would have to add 18 million jobs just to get back to the same employment rate as 2000.

Mass unemployment has been particularly devastating in African American working class communities. According to U.S. government official labor statistics, unemployment afflicts 16.7 percent of all African Americans, and 19.1 percent of African American men.

Official government unemployment statistics do not include those whose unemployment insurance benefits have expired and have given up looking for work because they cannot find a job, and they do not include the millions of severely underemployed people who would like to work full time but can only find employment for a few hours each week.

Black working class communities are afflicted by another brutal crisis: mass incarceration. A Black boy has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime as opposed to a 1 in 17 chance for a white boy. A Black girl has a 1 in 17 chance of going to prison in her lifetime as opposed to a 1 in 111 chance for a white girl.

The picture is clear and bleak: the economic crisis has been devastating on working and poor people. It has been even harsher to Black working class communities where the crisis is compounded by mass criminalization and incarceration campaign.

It is with all this in mind that the ANSWER Coalition is joining with other organizations to call for a “Jobs not Jails,” contingent at the Saturday, Oct. 15 rally for jobs called by the National Action Network along with a number of labor organizations. The burgeoning Occupy movement, mass actions by labor unions, strikes by prisoners in Georgia and California are signs of a growing mass movement against the ruthless assaults of the rich on poor and oppressed people. These are the signs that we can, and we are, fighting back! Join us on Oct. 15!
